With elevations ranging from 1,360 to 2,300 meters above sea level, this area is a critical site for biodiversity and ecosystem services in Mexico&#8217;s central highlands.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Ecological Significance of Tlachinoltepetl<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Historically, Veracruz\u2019s natural landscapes were dominated by tropical and temperate forests, which supported extensive biodiversity. Today, remaining forest fragments are vital sanctuaries for threatened and endangered species listed in NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 and the IUCN Red List. While endemism in Veracruz is moderate, the state boasts 131 species found nowhere else in the world, concentrated primarily in cloud and tropical forests.<\/p>\n<p>Tlachinoltepetl plays a crucial role in regional water management. Its dense vegetation, including Alamo (<em>Platanus mexicana<\/em>), Oaks (<em>Quercus spp.<\/em>), Sangregado (<em>Croton draco<\/em>), and Tree Ferns (<em>Alsophila firma<\/em>), helps replenish the Jamapa River basin. This forest not only stores carbon but also buffers communities against natural disasters like landslides and floods.<\/p>\n<p>The forest is home to 687 species, including amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and insects. Insects, which fulfill critical ecological roles\u2014such as pollination, pest control, and decomposition\u2014are especially important.
